Sound of detonation

Can detonation happen at like 1.5k rpms at 5mph? When I drive around really slow, I hear a REALLY quiet tapping noise coming from the engine bay. It's BARELY audible.

I've got one step colder plugs, and my timing's retarded to 8 degrees btdc. I'm also running a high flow fuel pump. Everything else is stock.

More than likely that sound you are hearing is your valves.


Pinging or Detonation sounds like somebody threw some marbles in your engine.

I don't think I ever paid as close attention to what my car is doing/sounds like before. Ever since I installed the SC... I'm PARANOID. Hahaha.

I would say it sounds more like sand hitting tin foil. Kinda of a fant sound crackling comming from the engine.

Would my valves only make that noise under load?

I can't seem to recreate that sound while I'm not in gear.

I know someone said they're not worth crap, but my AF guage was always blacked completely out with I got that part throttle tip in.

I mean in open loop it bounces, but with the noise, it just buries with no lights at all.

Marbles is a pretty good description.

After the map controller, it never does it anymore.

Hmm.. this sound is also when I'm not boosting... 'cuz I'm only at 1500-2500 rpms.

If my valves are making noise.. should I do a valve adjustment?

Can it be the tip in detonation if it's happening when I'm not boosting?

And can it be the valves if it only happens under load?

Cars can knock even without boost, usually under load, such as mild accleration in high gear (at slow speeds) or going up hill(in a higher gear also) Basically when the engine starts lugging from being in too low a gear, if it's going to knock without being in boost you'll hear it then. Hot weather makes it even more likely.

I think I've found out what it is.

Apparently the AIT relay that clicks at ~1 pound of boost.

If you keep the boost at ~1 pound.. it'll tap like a telegraph.

I think that might be what I've been hearing.
